We raise chickens for eggs, and also chickens for meat. At any time there are two to four flocks in different stages and in different places on the property.
We have a small flock of laying chickens. We mix the breeds so that we have a variety of colors and sizes of eggs.
After a few weeks in a brooder and under lights (for heat) we move the layers into our mobile chicken tractor, which is a coop on wheels.
The chicken coop is moved to fresh pasture weekly, and the chickens are able to free range to feed on the grass and insects. The enriched diet creates higher-quality eggs, and they enhance the soil with what they leave behind.
We mix our breeds so that we have a variety of colors and sizes of eggs, both by purchasing day old chicks from local feed stores and by hatching some of our own. Some of our chicken breeds include: Easter Eggers, Bielefelders, Cuckoo Maran crosses, Silkie crosses, Buff Orpingtons, and Wyandottes. We also have two roosters to help protect our flock: Mitchell, the Easter Egger, and Hansel, the Bielefelder.
Today, we provide eggs to family and friends, not for sale.
Meat Chickens
We raise Freedom Ranger chickens moved daily on pasture. During the day the meat chickens are released from their “ChickShaw” coop to free range on bugs and clover on pasture. At night they head back to their ChickShaw which we close to help protect them nighttime predators. Their forage area is always enclosed with electric net fencing, both to keep them in and to keep predators out. Join our mailing list to be the first to hear about pasture-raised chicken sales! This year we are selling a limited number of whole chickens for $6/lb upon request. We also are offering a poultry processing class - participants will each go home with a processed chicken, included in the class fee!
